Hi My Name is M0dest.
i am an anonymous artist
and you have found your way into my most recent project
<error messages>
where the idea is to use 404 pages
(or what we like to call the abandoned walls of the internet)

as a Canvas for art that creates a human connection with a person that lands on the page
typically 404 pages tell us

we are lost

we made a mistake

go back
     buy more stuff

why?
are we not more human than that?
i think we are
so i have spent the last several months
visiting sites
finding 404 pages
and creating a piece of art to
<<< replace that 404 page >>>
that fits the company mission,

but is also a message wrapped in art
that poses a very human question or statement
like this < Coming soon >
collectors that mint error messages

have a mission

to work with the community to get their
error messages

implemented on websites >
soon

it is our hope

that we see a wave of sites changing their 404 pages to the art we provide

and instead of people feeling lost
people will  feel found>

will you play a part?

HOW ERROR MESSAGES WORKS

ERROR MESSAGES ARTWORKS are effectively a replacement 404 page for one of hundreds of websites.

Each documented in the metadata. Art was designed specifically for each website, which includes a visual work, and an embedded message for the visitor.

ERROR MESSAGES also has an element of public participation. Collectors who have minted 404 tokens will work with m0dest and the community to try to get these artwork pages implemented.

Each site has a bounty. There will be a $ token and an amount rewarded per artwork implemented.
Tokens can be sold, or used as currency for collecting art. Tokens art not financial instruments and should be considered for entertainment purposes only.

PROJECT RESEARCH

404 Not Found.

A near universal understanding - an unwanted announcement of an unanticipated problem. Every property on the internet has one -nearly all delivering the same message: you are lost. You made a mistake. Every user of the internet has had an interaction with this artifact our our technology infrastructure.

The 404 term originated in the 1980s from Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web. He explained later that his intent was for 404 error messages to be slightly apologetic. Which, after all, is apropos given that the tech itself is built by humans, and humans are, well fallible.

The code itself was born because every link in a system was intended to go somewhere, and a database needs to update links when the target is removed or changed. However these links sometimes refer to data that does not exist, so Berners-Lee decided to solve for the missing content.

The most omnipresent digital asset, the 404, is the result. A page isa servers way of telling a user that they have reached the last page of the internet, or a dead end. Or that they have made a mistake in their data entry.

Standard 404 Pages

The typical 404 error page is often a missed opportunity for deeper engagement with users. Standard 404 pages generally display minimal text, such as "404 Error: Page Not Found" or "Oops! This page doesn't exist.
"These messages are purely functional and offer no emotional or informational value beyond acknowledging the error.

Understanding the Psychological Disruption

When users encounter a 404 error, it typically triggers a cognitive and emotional response, often one of frustration or confusion. This interruption in the user's expected digital pathway can lead to irritation, a short-term reduction in user satisfaction, and potentially a decision to leave the website altogether.

Psychological studies on user interface design suggest that unexpected disruptions can significantly impact user stress levels and overall satisfaction with a digital experience.

The Role of Creative 404 Pages in Mitigating Negative Responses

Creative 404 pages can play a crucial role in transforming the potential negative impact of an error into a positive experience.

By incorporating elements of surprise, humor, and interactive art, these pages can effectively redirect the user's initial frustration towards curiosity and engagement. This approach leverages the psychological principle of 'positive interruption,' where an unexpected, pleasant surprise can enhance mood and improve retention.
